Small metal bracket to retain the odometer shaft on VW T3 models with a push on speedo cable (as opposed to a screw on speedo cable found on earlier models)

A common problem on VW T3 models is that the odometer (the thing that counts how many miles or KMs you van has done since it was new) stops working.

Over time the shaft that the numbered wheels sits on works it’s way out of it’s mounting and goes far enough to disengage drive from the drive cog.

Yes, we know, you can disassemble to Speedo and Odo assembly and simply push the shaft back in but experience says that this is a temporary fix and at some point it’s going to stop working again.

This small metal bracket simply mounts using the original mounting screw and retains the shaft in place to stop it ever coming off ever again.

  • Remove instrument panel from vehicle.
  • Detach wiring from back of speedo.
  • Undo 4 the screws holding the speedo assembly into the instrument binnacle and lift clear.
  • Flick the speedo needle to the other side of it’s stop and mark it’s resting position, it should be directly opposite a marking out the outer rim of the speedo face (but not always, if it worked, best to put it back where it was)
  • Hold the hub of the speedo needle with thumb and forefinger and remove the needle (they can be super tight, don’t snap the needle!
  • Unscrew the 2x small black flat bladed screws from the speedo face and lift clear.
  • Push odometer drive gear and shaft back in to place with a reassuring clunk.
  • Remove the top left corner screw and align the peg on the housing with the hole in the repair bracket.
  • Refit screw.
  • Check that the bracket is close enough to stop the shaft coming loose and far enough away that it doesn’t impede the shafts rotation, if so small tweaks with a couple of pairs of pliers should suffice.
