VW AAZ Injector lines

The VW AAZ Engine

VW 1.9TD "AAZ" engine injector pipes
VW 1.9TD “AAZ” engine injector pipes

For a long time the VW 1.9TD “AAZ” has been a popular engine upgrade to the T3 however they are getting harder and harder to find at sensible money and so are the injector pipes.

As time has gone on, other more readily available engines have taken over in popularity to retro fit into a T3 but there are still a lot of T3 out there with the venerable AAZ sat in the engine bay doing their thing.

The supply of new AAZ injector lines dried up years ago leaving customer scrabbling around hoovering up what they could from forums and eBay to keep their AAZ ticking along nicely.

After the sad demise of the AAZ in Simon’s own T3 Westy and over 15 years of stirling service pushing the camper up hill and down dale it was replaced with a TDI. This left us with a set of injector pipes that we could have replicated and which we’ve duly done.

This then opened the can of worms of which set of AAZ lines we actually had, you see as time went on the injector lines were updated as were the injection pumps.

The differences

There appears to be 4 distinct injection pump types for the AAZ and 3 different sets of injector line sets. As usual from VW, trying to work with the parts catalogue and work out when and why they changed is a living nightmare with some injector pipes changing on a VIN number and some on an engine number. When you add in the multitude of vehicles that the AAZ is fitted to, well we gave up!

Here’s the different AAZ injector line sets, to the best of our knowledge.

Cylinder VW No. Engine Date Range
Early Set ’91 – ’94 1 028 130 301 C AAZ ’91 – ’94
2 028 130 302 C AAZ ’91 – ’94
3 028 130 303 D AAZ ’91 – ’94
4 028 130 304 C AAZ ’91 – ’94

Mid Set ’95 – ’98 1 028 130 301 G AAZ ’95 – ’98
2 028 130 302 G AAZ ’95 – ’98
3 028 130 303 H AAZ ’95 – ’98
4 028 130 304 G AAZ ’95 – ’98

Late Set ’98 – ’98 1 028 130 301 N AAZ 98 – ’98
2 028 130 302 N AAZ 95 – ’98
3 As “Mid” set AAZ
4 As “Mid” set AAZ

Some engines had an immobiliser over the ELAB (Elektrisches Abstellventil / electrical shut off device), some had KSB (Kaltstartbeschleuniger / Cold Start Device) later pumps had electronically adjustable commencement of injection and some injection pumps had an LDA (Ladedruckabhängiger Anschlag, / Manifold Pressure Compensator) whilst others did not. There are quite a few variables at work here.

Usually the changes to the injector lines are slight, a bend in a slightly different place to give clearance to that new “thing” that they introduced. Our problem is, we have some samples but we are not sure of which age range they are from.

The sample set came from an engine fitted with the nicest injection pump, the easiest one to work with and devoid of all the whistles and bells so our educated guess is that they are from an “Early” set or a “Mid” set, that’s not to say they don’t fit the “Late” engines, truth is we just don’t know!

What we do know that we have a set that works together on a AAZ engine.

As always, we welcome feedback

T3 Gear Linkage UJ Pins – 251711291 – Now in stock

A few years ago when these started becoming a problem we started offering a machined stainless steel bolt as a solution to worn/broken pins.

Times have moved on with the T3 now, and people are demanding parts that not only do the same job as the original, but look original too.
So, we’re now happy to offer these original style UJ pins for the T3 gear linkage from 1983 on.

They’re very close to the original style, and supplied in Yellow Zinc Plate just like the original.

Ignition Lead Sets – T3 Waterboxer (early and late)

We’ve been making up the HT lead sets for the early Waterboxer engines in house for some time, mainly because the available kits aren’t correct for the earlier engines. Either the wrong ends, or the wrong lengths, or the wrong resistance.

We’ve had to up our game a little though as keeping up with them has become a problem as we’ve got busier and busier over the years.
It also makes sense to have the later kits made too as the prices keep rising. Every little helps!

So, we are now having our own leads manufactured to our spec and with our own branding.
Same original spec. Same quality components. Just made in larger batches to save us time and save you money!

Seat belt upper mount

We’ve sold rear seatbelts for the T3 for a good many years now, initially designed for retro fitting into the rear of a Westfalia T3 models but soon people were asking if we could adapt the kit to suit panel van conversions, naturally we obliged.
The way we got around the lack of factory mounting points was to use universal strengthening plates, it was a solution that worked but could have always been better.
We recently broke a knackered old T3 Caravelle and as some of you know that they had factory seat belt mountings (Models 251 and 252 don’t have factory seatbelt mountings, basically Panel vans where models 253 to 256 Kombi/Caravelle have factory seat belt mountings) so we chopped out the panels and the strengthening, drew them up and sent them off to the machine shop for fabricating.
Naturally with most UK converted “campervans” starting life as basic panel vans they don’t have the factory fitted seatbelt mountings these brackets should help a nice tidy seatbelt install for some customers.
The factory design as been ever so slightly adapted to allow retro fitment without welding and retains the strength that VW built in.

For some reason we’ve sold loads of seatbelts recently but we haven’t been asked to fit any so when we had the opportunity to fit one for a customer the other day it seemed like a perfect opportunity to take a few pictures.

Van was a late Auto-sleeper, obviously we needed to strip out the rear panelling first.

Tools required.

  • Scissors [to cut out the drilling template]
  • Centre punch.
  • Drill
  • 5mm drill bit
  • 17mm drill/hole saw/cone cut.
  • Rivet gun.
T3 Seatbelt template
First start by cutting the template out, there are 2 supplied, one for the left, one for the right. Align the circles on the template with the dimpled in the bodywork.
T3 seatbelt centrepunch.
Centrepunch through the template to mark where to drill the hole for the seatbelt mounting. Yes, we know, there is no template in the picture! I centre punched it lightly and this was me going over the mark.
Drill
Using the 5mm drill, drill out the rearmost dimple, this hole will be used to rivet the plate into place.
Drill drill drill.
….and then drill the centre popped mark.
Punch!
Instead of drilling this hole we used a sheet metal punch that bolts together, the bolt in the middle is tightened and it punches a nice clean hole out. You could use a drill bit, a hole saw or a cone cutter/step drill to do this but please be careful not to mark the panel behind!
Prime and paint.
Once the hole is punched through then prime and paint any bare metal edges.

Once the paint is dry it’s time to slide the mounting plate into place. You’ll have to take the rear pillar vent out to do this. Align the plate using the rivet and dimple in the metalwork.

Sliding Door Window catches…

If the mails and calls we receive regularly are anything to go by, these are the bane of some T3 owners lives… and T4 and LT owners too!

So, we now stock all the available components, and in fairness the ones that fail… the Handle, the Locking Pin, Support Bracket and Internal Seal.
We’re working on the other bits, but these will make many people a bit more secure for the time being.

T3 Waterbox Conrods – Complete set of 4

Now in stock, complete with rod bolts, nuts and little end bearings.

Genuine VW New Old Stock.
Some things we’d prefer to sell a new version instead of one thats been sitting on a shelf degrading for 30 years, but things like this… well there really is no substitute for the originals, and its not like there is anything here that will have weakened with age.
They still have the lovely sticky oil coating applied by the manufacturer 🙂
